What defines the term cocktails?

Cocktails are alcoholic drinks made by combining one or more types of spirits with other ingredients like mixers, syrups, and garnishes. The term “cocktail” originally referred to a specific type of mixed drink that contained spirits, sugar, water, and bitters, but over time it has come to encompass a wide range of mixed drinks that vary in ingredients and preparation methods.

A cocktail can be served in a variety of ways, including straight up (without ice), on the rocks (over ice), blended with ice, or even hot. They are often served in a specific type of glassware that is designed to enhance the flavors and aromas of the drink.
